Pollution of water sources reduces the amount of fresh water available to us and polluted water causes disease and death.Every year, 1.7 million people die from disease,such as diarrhea. Nine of ten people who die from dirty water are children.Worldwide, infectious diseases such as waterborne diseases are the number one killer of children under five years old.

More people die from unsafe water annually than from all forms of violence, including war.

Only 20 percent of India’s sewage is treated before being discharged,leading to heavily polluted rivers and lakes.The extensive retention of excreta underground, unless carefully controlled,risks the pollution of groundwater, on which 80-90 percent of India’s rural population depend for drinking water.

The government has built several large dams on the Orange River to store water. Tunnels and canals carry the water to areas where it is needed. The government is also trying to prevent water pollution. New treatments are being used to clean water, and mines and companies that pollute are fined.

In the developing world, around 90 percent of sewage is discharged untreated into rivers, some of which are so laden with foul matter in the dry season that aquatic life is stifled.

Since rivers continue to be used for bathing laundry and even for drinking water in many environments, the failure to treat pathogenic excreta before its discharge, or find other ways confining it safety from human contact, represents a major public health threat.
