Flag Study Name:

Very often, the colors used in a flag represent the values of that country (or other entity).

BLACK: often represents determination, ethnic heritage, and/or defeating one's enemies.

BLUE: often represents freedom, vigilance, perseverance, justice, prosperity, peace, and/or patriotism.

GREEN: can symbolize the Earth, agriculture, fertility, and/or Muslim religion.

RED: often represents courage, revolution, hardiness, blood, and/or valor.

WHITE: often represents peace, purity, mountain snow, and/or innocence. A simple white flag represents surrender.

YELLOW (GOLD): often represents the sun, wealth, and/or justice.

In the box below, sketch a simple design of a flag for your colony and tell what it symbolizes. Then make a full-sized version on a separate sheet of paper.

Antigua: The sun represents the dawning of a new era; red - the energy of the people; blue - hope; black, the African ancestry of the people. The combination of yellow, blue and white represent the sun, sand and sea.

Austria: The story goes that one of the early rulers of Austria wore a white tunic in battle one day, and the battle was so bloody that the entire tunic was bloodstained by the end of the fighting. When he took his belt off, however, the part of the tunic protected by the belt was still white. However, I haven't been able to trace the name of the particular ruler or what battle it was he was fighting in. At any rate, true or not, that legend is the origin of the modern Austrian flag .

Botswana: The colours on the flag correspond to those on the national coat of arms. The blue represents water (the motto on the national arms is PULA, meaning "let there be rain"). The white-black-white bands depict the racial harmony of
