Robert Connolly, the director, of the film “Paper Planes” uses influencing techniques to emphasize key themes to the viewer within the text. Themes such as loss, independence, friendship and relationships are indicated to the viewer in various different techniques such as sound, lighting, camera angles, high and low camera shots and close ups and many others in a very influencing way. It feels like loss is the biggest theme shown to the viewers.

The theme of loss is in the centre of the plots development and it is highlighted through the film by lighting and close ups. They indicate loss to the viewer at many times and with different ways. The plot mainly centers on the young protagonist Dylan Webber and his complicated relationship with his dad, Jack. The loss of mum has a significant impact on Dylan and Jack and Jack is always remembering her and Dylan is getting him out of the depression. The theme is made obvious throughout the film with the use of lighting and close ups. Therefore the character’s struggle with loss is evident through the use of lighting and close ups.

The plot largely centers on the young protagonist Dylan Webber and his complicated relationship with his father, Jack. The theme independence is important so Dylan learns and also because Jack is by himself therefore he has time to stop the depression and get over it.The themes development is showed to the audience in an obvious way by the use of camera angles and shots. This is when Dylan has to take the bus by himself and when he goes home by himself and at that time there is a birds eye view. He has to go by himself to Japan as well and he has no one. The
