NCTM's Guiding Instructional Principles

Mathematics is an important subject which helps students in the future with schooling and jobs. A major goal of the Principals are to help all students learn math. A mistake teachers shouldn't make is giving the children a minimum level of objectives, by decreasing their standards these children are at a disadvantage. Students need to be motivated through role models who demonstrate the value of all subjects in school. Students need more support when teachers expect high expectations. Some of the suggestions were to have great educational program and to try teaching with something they have prior knowledge too. Mathematics makes more sense to students when they can relate to them. Some students may require tutor, study groups, or staying after school. Non English speaking students should get special attention to ensure they are not left behind. Its negative is that assessments often underestimate the mathematical proficiency of not native speakers of English. Assessments are for viewing the progress the students have made, giving the teacher the decision whether an idea should be revised.

Technology can help with structured tutorials or to help strengthen there ability, but technology shouldn't be used to the extreme. The curriculum should build up on the students' previous education, teachers should always be looking to finding new ways to join today's ideas to past experiences. The teacher should always demonstrate the idea in more forms than just one giving the students a clearer understanding. Students have different experiences having a teacher give different examples, can help student associate to different problems. The atmosphere in the classroom should also supportive for students.
