LET’S HAVE A COLLEGE EDUCATION AND DEGREE!

Nowadays, college education and degree is still being debatable whether it is important or not. The U.S. Department of Education's National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) analyzed about education level which influences someone’s work. They found that there are more workers with college degree rather than workers with only the high school degree. It proves that there are some companies want to have employee who has college degree. Yet for some high school graduates, attending college life is not really important, because they may think that skill is enough for having a good job. Moreover, to study in a college, high school graduates have to spend much money, because college education nowadays is expensive. An expensive cost makes not all of the high school graduates can continue their education in a college level. On the other hand, even though college education is expensive but it is really worth it, because it can make students get more knowledge which is so needed and important for their future life. College education is also a step for their better future. Therefore, college education and degree are necessary for high school graduates, because it will give some benefits.

Fortunately, college education and degree will give high school graduates a lot of experiences. Based on my experience, college life nowadays has a lot of activities in order to develop the skills of the students. Not only academic skill but also for student’s physical skill. Then, by joining those activities, students will get more experiences and knowledge. They can learn many things related to the activity, and it will really useful for their future life. For example, if students join a senate, they will learn about organization and how to organize something. In addition, socialize in the college is needed for students, because they will learn a characteristic of their friends and try to accept the differences between them. This experience will help them in their future career, because they in a career they will meet a lot of people with different character. Fortunately, they can understand the differences because they already learned about it in the college. If high school graduates not enter the college life, they will not have those memorable experiences.

The other reason why college education and degree is necessary is because many companies require a college degree. Most of high school students who are attending a college life hope that they will get a good job after they graduate and have a degree. They expect that by having higher level of education, they will have a better career in their future life too. Moreover, Academic Corner says that some high school students do not know what they want to do for their future life. Yet the one thing that they know is they just want to have a better job. It is because by having a better job, they can earn more money, and then makes their life become better. However, there are high school graduates who think that without college degree they still can have a job, but in fact, the job is not good as if they have college degree. Based on my interviewees who do not have college degree, they said that without college degree they still can get a job, but the position is not higher as people who have a college degree. Actually, a college degree nowadays also becomes a regulation in most of companies. Most of companies want to have employees who have college degree rather than not. They may think that college graduates have more experiences in work on something and have a higher education. It is because if the employees have a higher education means that they have good background education. Then if someone has a good background education means that they can make the companies become better. Thus, if high school graduates want to have a better career, then it is good if they have college education and degree.

Besides those two reasons, college education and degree also can help students make more money. In fact, attending college life makes students spend a lot of money to pay it, and students also have to buy all the things they need for their college education and activities. For example, based on my friends’ experience, to join a seminar or workshop, they had to pay around Rp. 15.000 for a workshop and Rp. 35.000 – Rp.100.000 or even more for a seminar. My other friends who study in civil engineer also already spent almost one million rupiah just for buy a calculator. It proves that college life is not cheap anymore. Then how can college education and degree make more money for the graduates? Even though, studying in college will spend much money, but after students graduate the college, they will get a bigger opportunity to have a better job which will give them more money.
