Managing up - Grace

Grace:

1. In order to effectively manage up, what things should Grace understand about herself?

• Grace is growing and exploring new areas in her field and is at her early career stage. She is ready to take up new responsibilities in her organisation.        
• Grace has been part of this organisation only for 15 months and also at junior level position thus she has to learn a lot about leadership skills.
• Grace should learn to abide by the decisions taken by her seniors.
• She needs to learn to follow the protocol.

1. In order to effectively manage up, what things should Grace understand about Landon?

• Grace needs to understand Landon’s role as her boss.
• Landon has always motivated and supported Grace from the start of her journey In this organisation.
• He has given her the key to success in the company.
• Directly getting in touch with Landon’s manager will put him in problem; his manager might think that Landon is not capable of handling such situations.

1. Should Grace send that email to Bill? What would be likely impact on Landon? On Grace?

• Grace shouldn’t send the email to Bill, she should follow the protocol.
• Sending a direct email to Bill could have a bad impression on Landon’s managing skill; which would be embarrassing for Landon.
•  Grace doesn’t know how Bill or Landon might respond to her email; this could be risky in a way.

1. Imagine Grace has come to you for help. Develop a plan for her to manage her relationship with Landon in order to meet her career and personal goals.

• Grace needs to take decision after considering the consequences; she shouldn’t rush to take decisions.
• Grace should wait for another meeting with Landon and communicate effectively her career and personal goals.
• Grace needs to learn things from Landon and work on her professional development before moving on to new role.
• Grace needs to explore more learnings in her current role than being in a hurry to take up new responsibilities as its only being 15 months in her current role.
• Grace should learn to react to situations in a correct way. For eg: the way she reacted infront of Landon was not right; this might impact her future.
