How the food I eat defines who I am

Sitting in my grandma's basement I watch the evening news. The usual assortment of senseless violence and crooked politicians assaults my mind, making me shake my head in wonder. "What is this world coming to?" I wonder quietly to myself. All of these thoughts come crashing down as I hear my grandma call to me from upstairs. "Dinners ready!" she yells. I come out of my TV induced daze and suddenly realize how hungry I am. The maddening smell of homemade spaghetti sauce fills my nostrils and I run for the stairs. This is the moment I've been waiting the past six hours for, and the reason I skipped breakfast this morning.

My grandma is full blooded Sicilian, and makes the best spaghetti I've ever had. Italian food has always been my favorite, and whenever I go to visit she knows exactly what to make. Spaghetti, eggplant parmesan, lasagna, sausages, meatballs, home-made garlic bread, I love them all. When I was younger I designated myself the official taste tester of the family dinners at my grandma's house, and whenever I visit I try to hold to this tradition. You may call me old fashioned, but I say the longer you cook something the better it is. These day's people just buy the microwaveable lasagna dinners and they are ready in seconds. If you want a watery and tasteless meal then by all means, go buy that junk. Slow-cooked is the way to go in my opinion, and this in some ways reflects the kind of person that I am.

You must be very patient to make the perfect spaghetti sauce. You have to be willing to devote most of your day to slowly stirring and adding various ingredients to the mix. It is this slow process that brings out the flavor. I find this to be true in my daily life as well, like when I am writing an essay for class. I could very easily write on a topic that mattered very little to me, but that I knew was what the teacher wanted to hear. Making it fairly bland and boring to read, but what I knew I would get a decent grade on. I like to take my time when doing anything, and make sure everything "tastes" right in my mind. It is important for me to be able to relate the topic to something in my personal life, such
