On the 5th of January, US president Obama had a speech about his new strategy to curb gun violence in America, which has initiated a global discussion on the gun control in United states. So would gun control work in United States, can it make US a safer country?
As everyone knows, United states has the highest number of crimes that related to guns. According to a five-year data from centers for disease control, the annual average death number from gunshot is 32,964. In an average day, 91 people are died by guns in america. Among these 91 people, 56 are from suicides, 31 are from homicides and the rest of them are from other situations. It is no wonder that gun control is such an important issue. Obama’s proposals focus on the new background check requirements system which is more efficient and accurate. The background check requirements can prevent some dangerous people who are mentally ill or violent from getting guns. It makes criminals harder to get guns and kill people, which may decrease the gun violence. And gun control may decrease the crimes in US, guns can rise the passion of criminal and make them more confident since the guns are really powerful weapons. Some states with strict gun laws see the fewest gun-related death, such as NY, it has 4.1% of gun-related death per hundred thousands of people. But in contrast, louisiana where has the fewest control on gun ownership has 19.1% of gun-related death.Gun suicides are a huge issue of the gun violence, gun deaths are mostly suicides. Some strict laws of gun ownership with waiting periods require a specified numbers of days the time a firearm is purchased and it is physically transferred to the purchaser. The waiting periods aim to give law enforcement officials sufficient time to do a background check and also give people who may have impulsive acts of violence a “cooling off” period.
However, gun control would still have a limited effect on the gun violence as there are already over 300 millions of guns exist in the private hands. Gun control is flawed as a crime control method, it doesn’t really affect criminals who are people who don’t follow the laws. Guns are tools for them to kill people and most of the time gun control doesn’t stop them to commit, because they can use other tools like knives. Every place that has been banned guns has seen non-gun crime rates go up even though the gun violence rates go down. The background check
