The Impact of Overseas Studies on International Students and their Employability

Introduction

This literature review focuses on the impact of overseas studies and international experience on Chinese international students, their employability and perceived challenges for international students from China in their process of applying for a job. Brown &Hesketh(2004) has stated that according to the range of graduates’ papers, there is considerable focus on the transit from higher levels of studies to practical working place. This project aims at exploring Chinese international students’ employability, impact of study abroad and challenges they are facing while applying for a job.

Employability

For employers, Sumantra (2004) has stated that employability means building an atmosphere which can enhance the overall development of employees in the company, thus making profit for the organisation. This literature review is mainly focused on the employability of graduates and undergraduates. For graduates, namely future employees, employability has been regarded as a combination of personal accomplishment, knowledge acquaintance and quality which makes it easier for individual to get a position and achieve success in the talent market (Peter &Mantz, 2003).

However, Brown (2003) has argued that the definition of employability was merely focused on people’s contribution on their working skills. Furthermore, there is little research on the methodology for graduates to get the basic information of the labour market as well as to boost up their employability skills through education in universities (Tomlinson, 2007).

With the processing of time as well as the upgrading of recent research on employability, Huang (2013) has suggested that employability should not be bounded to traditional doctrine of supplement and demanding in economic aspect, on the other hand, it should target to the consolidation among skills gained by graduates, along with the influential element in job market and links between these two factors.  [a]

The Impact of Overseas Studies on International Students                                

An international study experience is considered as an additional highlight during  graduates’job seeking process in their home country, especially for asian international students. (Bodycott, 2009). This is supported by Bredden (2014) in his research on Japanese graduates, who points out that the role of graduates with an overseas background are becoming more important in Japanese labour market and they tend to be awarded by their distinguished characteristics apart from local Japanese, i.e. appearing to be more confident than the other colleagues in the workplace. Hong Kong shows partially the same research result as for Japan. From Waters (2007) point of view, graduates from western countries are more likely appreciated by the recruit team in Hong Kong companies, for the employers themselves are often with overseas backgrounds.
