TerraCog is a leading manufacturing company specializing in Global Positioning System (GPS) and sonar equipment and is skilled at translating customer feedback into exceptional product design and functionality. Started in 1977, it manufactured high-end sonar equipment for sport fisherman and boaters. Even though they are not always first to market, they surpass the competitors by addressing the customer needs.

In the summer of 2006, Posthaste, a competitor had unveiled a GPS prototype “BirdsI” with satellite imagery which was initially ignored by TerraCog as it didn’t offer substantive performance improvement. While BirdsI didn’t impress TerraCog team, it had become a success.By spring of 2007, TerraCog’s sales reps have noticed the demand for the satellite imagery GPS and they decided to bring forward project Aerial. TerraCog planned aAerial to hit the stores by 2008 holiday season with same functions and design as its predecessor, but with modified visual of GPS platform.

The product development team felt that the product would be superior and more simulating technically if they have another six months. Also they had several other ideas for products in cycling and GPS applications which they believed TerraCog would capitalize upon. This made them less enthusiastic about the Aerial. TerraCog decided to redesign the existing GPS platform to avoid the costs of new modelings and major reconfigurations, and to speed up the development.

Project Aerial was launched in the Q3 of the year 2007after discussion between Sales Vice-president Mr Ed Pryor, Mr Allen Roth, Director of Design and Development and Mr Richard Fiero, president of the company who took the decision as there is demand for the GPS with satellite imagery like BirdsI. They also compromised on speed as satellite imagery requires a lot of processing power which would increase the costs and price of the product.
