Executive Summary:

The Pharmacology and Cell Biophysics Department (PCB) aspirations are to recruit high quality research scientists with “a bench to bed-side approach” to lead and complement our efforts on the development of novel therapeutic approaches. These recruitments will aim to strengthen the bridges between basic and clinical research, enhance graduate recruitment and retention, as well as lead to novel technologies for treating Ohioans afflicted with diseases.

In today’s business, managing internal activities and issues of a profit or not-for-profit business is only part of the responsibilities a manager must administer. Another important aspect of running a successful organization is how to implement strategic plan. Strategic planning is more than ensuring an organization will be able to maintain its reserves; it also provides a forecast of where your association expects to be in five years as well as a roadmap of how an institute will get there. Strategic planning is a systematic planning process involving a number of steps that recognizes a current status of the organization (mission statement, vision for the future), operating values, needs (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats), goals, prioritized actions and strategies, action plans, and monitoring plans.

The key to maximize an organization’s probability of being both independent and prosperous over a long-term is to pursue a strategy model that defines the business, the ends it seeks, and the means it will use to accomplish those ends. Below is a strategic analysis that expresses how the Department of Pharmacology and Cell Biophysics (PCB) intends to contribute to a society that sustains it by defining the company’s mission and social responsibility.

Departmental goals are to: a) create visibility of our faculty in basic sciences, that spans excellence several programs; b) cultivate an atmosphere that is highly competitive and well-funded research programs; c) increase the collaborative and highly interactive nature of our faculty’s research programs; d) increase the quality of our doctoral students and postdoctoral fellows; e) promote the resources and commitment that UC has already invested in this department; and f) expand potential for further growth in the departments research, which will enable us to attract and nurture first class doctoral students as well as commercialize our research findings to provide an economic benefit to the State of Ohio.

Background:

The Department of Pharmacology and Cell Biophysics is apart of the College of Medicine at the University of Cincinnati and will be the subject of this analysis. Although no commencement date can be uncovered, this department has been operational and recognized for over 40 years based on the statement of one of the oldest inaugurate faculty. Up to 10 years ago, the department was one of the most desired basic research graduate programs in the College of Medicine. This department flourished with top-notch faculty with an abundance of funding and produced graduate student sought after by leading scientific industries and prestigious Universities. During the past 10 years, countless events transpired that has caused the department to deteriorate slowly. A new Department Chair was appointed and with poor guidance and leadership in addition to his nonchalant attitude, the chair proved to be inexperienced and meager Department Head. Currently, faculty, have become lazy and as a result, decreases in funding and graduate students have taken place. Consequently, a new Department Chair has been appointed to restore research opportunities, motivate current faculty, acquire as well as retain innovative faculty and students.

Mission Statement:

The Department of Pharmacology and Cell Biophysics weighs importance aimed to recruit outstanding faculty members to mentor upcoming and brilliant students with a passion for research. These scientists will enhance our strengths in the basic science and clinical arenas with the long-range goal of conquering human disorders by translating and commercializing our discoveries into solutions for these deadly diseases.

Vision Statement:

The Department of Pharmacology and Cell Biophysics’ vision is to convert current research into products (therapeutics) and further development of research in areas, such that clinicians in Ohio can provide the best care to their patients.

Values Statement:

The Department of Pharmacology and Cell Biophysics is a department that cultivates knowledge and develops as well as provides diverse collaborative relationships for students, staff and faculty that enhance learning, research, and innovative technologies within the University of Cincinnati Medical School.

Environmental Analysis:

Gathering and analyzing data about the PCB’s external environment to identify trends and impacts upon an organization has listed three forces of interest that affect its function within its community. The assessment of these external forces to the department illustrates how these may impact upon the department’s promotional effort. Particularly, culture, life-style, behavior and technology patterns.

Social Force

Because Social Factors is a force that affects a the PCB department through beliefs, values, attitudes, opinions, and the overall lifestyles of people within the community’s environment, the practices of the department must satisfy the desires and needs of individuals by controlling and adapting to environmental factors.

Like with any organization, the PCB department may not be able to control social changes throughout the community, nevertheless, they can develop tools to utilize collected information about these changes advantages in the industry. Social trends are easy to follow but hard to predict. However, these social trends can give the department high momentary success because it gives in to the community demands at the moment (Pearson, J.A., 2005).
