Although most cartoons can be entertaining, they usually do not follow the laws of nature as we know them. More often then not, rules are bent to make use of what needs to occur in the plot. For example, more than a few episodes of Spongebob Squarepants have fire occur underwater. This show usually takes place mainly underwater, so a campfire would not be possible. The data was gathered on January 9, 2006, in the afternoon after school. My question was for this experiment was how much Newton’s three laws of physics were followed in the show Spongebob Squarepants. The research was conducted in front of my television in my kitchen, as well as on my brother’s pc online. I was able to catch a few episodes of Spongebob while it aired on Nick in the afternoon, and in between the shows, I went to the pc for viewing online episodes if it was possible.

How often are Newton’s three laws of physics followed on Spongebob Squarepants? While watching the episodes of the show, I was able to take notes on aspects that might not follow the three laws. Online I was able to do this a bit easier, as I was able to pause the episode, and then continue it when I was finished writing. The first of Newton’s three laws is that an object moving in a straight line will continue moving in a straight line, unless acted on by an outside force. In the episode I viewed called “The Camping Episode”, Spongebob and Patrick go camping outside their houses, and Squidward wants to join in. When they are roasting marshmallows on the fire that was burning, Patrick’s marshmallow catches on fire, and he blows on it hard to put it out. When he does this, the marshmallow bits fly onto Squidward’s face. This occurs two more times, and on the third time Squidward dodges the marshmallow bits, and laughs at his accomplishment. However, the same marshmallow bits come flying back at his head, appearing to have made a stop in the direction that it was traveling at and going a direct reverse direction. This directly disobeys the first law. The second law of motion is that force will cause a change in the motion of an object. In the online episode called “Mermaid Man & Barnacle Boy VI вЂ" The Motion Picture”, Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy had jumped off of a building and fallen side by side onto the top of a car below them, landing gracefully. A little bit of background information will be of use here; Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy are two superheroes most
