Should Schools Implement School Uniforms?

Recently schools around the country are adopting uniform policies. With uniforms, schools will likely view an increase in security and a decrease in conflict, such as bullying. Uniforms also help drive focus towards academics. Essentially, there are no drawbacks of implementing a uniform policy; thus, schools should.

Requiring students to wear a uniform is beneficial not only to the school, but the student as well. For example, source 2 suggests that when everyone is wearing a uniform it is easier to identify who should and shouldn’t be on campus, increasing overall safety. Statistics from source 3 support this as well, claiming that a year after a public school in California adopted school uniforms, school crime decreased by 36 percent. Implementing uniforms is also an effort to eliminate fashion competition, which a portion of bullying stems from. Source 2 suggests that uniforms are “economical and easy for parents, are sometimes looked on as a solution to the atmosphere of impending danger that has settled on schools nationwide.” Which further supports my idea that uniforms can increase overall safety at school. This excerpt also brings me to my next point, which is: it is cheaper and easier to dress yourself or your child using a uniform, which often increases school attendance.

Additionally, uniforms help better establish the overall climate of a school. Without uniforms, schools must follow a district dress code. Saunders, from source 1, claims that he spent “60 to 90 minutes a day on dress code violations”. This takes away from the student. Is wearing spaghetti straps deserving of being sent home in order to change? Time is valuable in school, and taking away that time for something as trivial as what you’re wearing is wrong. Uniforms will help solve this issue; creating a different tone in the classroom, a place more serious about learning.
