REVIEW OF ARTICLE “WOMEN ON BOARDS AND CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY”

Analysed article is written by Eunjung Hyun, Daegyu Yang, Hojin Jung and Kihoon Hong and is called “Women on Boards and Corporate Social Responsibility”. Published on 24 March 2016 in journal “Sustainability”, volume 8, issue 4. Article consists of 25 pages.

As presented in the abstract of the article, authors goal was to offer reduce the deficit in the literature about positive influence of the female as independent directors on the company’s social responsibility and, also describing organizational context which leads female directorship to results into good CSR performance. In selected article two hypothesis were tested: H1: The greater the number (or proportion) of women independent directors, the better a firm’s CSR performance. H2: The effect hypothesized in H1 increases (decreases) for firms with more (less) consumer market orientation. And the hypothesies were grounded by theory and previous studies.

Authors used tables and figure for clearer understanding of submitted data. Where descriptive statistics, correlation coefficient, results of firm fixed-effect OLS models of antecedents of the CSR score, interactions of the model, Fixed-effect OLS models used in the research are presented. By using graphic tools authors enable readers to better understand the logic and development of research.

Main results are submitted in constructive way and showed, that the number (or proportion) of women independent directors in is positively associated with a firm’s CSR ratings and that the strength of this relationship depends on the level of the firm’s consumer market orientation.

It can be said that there are some advantages in this article. The title is clear and the abstract reflects the main idea and aspects of the article. The theoretical part represents informative overview of the theoretical background and the direction in which similar studies were conducted. In the methodology part the variables and model are introduced comprehensibly. However, authors could have summarised the model and present it as an equation for better understanding.  

For further investigation, there are presented some insights and suggestions, which encourage and enables other researchers to conduct in-depth research.
