In the restaurant service industry there are two major service providers; waiters, waitresses, and bartenders. At first glance the only thing that really differentiates them is their uniform. It goes much deeper than that though. The highly contrast in working environment, attitude, and knowledge base, but share similarities in function, approach, and secondary duties.

The environment that a bartender verses a server works in may only be inches apart, but there is a world of difference. For the server, they may have a different area every night that they work at. For a bartender though they work in the same few feet night after night. The server knows where everything is, but has to sometimes think about it for where they are at for the evening. The bartender knows their bar so well; they can work in it blindfolded and never have to look for anything.

The attitudes vary greatly between our service personnel as well. The bartender is your friend the minuet you walk in the door. The server though kind and respectful, focuses on meeting your needs and desires instead of being your friend. Bartenders act as consultants, physiatrists, and the buddy you have to tell your latest and greatest story too. Servers are the polite and cookie cutter person that the only thing you tell them is what you want to eat and drink that night.

As the saying goes, knowledge is power. When applied to our two workers, you get two very different powers. The server has huge and detailed knowledge of every food item that is served in the restaurant, but almost no knowledge of what is in the drinks or how they are made. The bartenders have a hugely vast knowledge of dinks, liquors, wines, and every thing that can be put in the glass with them. The bartenders also can hold their own on food items, which gives them a much broader range of knowledge than your average server.

Though we can see that servers and bartenders contrast to each other greatly, we still know that they are very much similar.
