Religion and Life Ai

(a) (i) Describe the variety of specifically religious programmes on the four main television channels. (4 Marks)

There is a wide range of worship and magazine programs shown on terrestrial television. Most religious programs are on Sundays, but some religious programs are on at special events during the year.

Since television began there has always been religious programs aimed at a Christian tradition. In Britain there were few other beliefs around in the United Kingdom. Christian religious programs roots came from Christian churches.

However, now religious programming has changed many people now in the UK are less religious and therefore less likely to watch these programs.

There are still a few religious programs that remain; most of these programs that still exist are made for sacred events such as Easter.

Some of the religious programs around today have been popular for a long time, and the two shows that I have watched have both been around for long a long time.

I looked for religious programs on channels 1,2,3,4 and 5.

One of the programmes that I watched was called Songs of Praise. Songs of Praise is a worship program aired at 5:20pm till 6:10pm and is on BBC one. Songs of Praise is on every Sunday during the God-slot time (the time in which Christian religious programs are scheduled) around 6.00pm. Songs of Praise is based upon traditional Christian hymns and human - intrest stories about how religion has changed their lives. Songs of praise has an average of 5-7 million viewers weekly, as this program is on Sunday only and is now in its 45th year, Songs of Praise is the most popular religious program in the UK and has been running for the longest duration of time, compared to any other religious television program in the world. This show does not involve people discussing their view points; this is because Songs of Praise is about Christians singing hymns. When Songs of Praise was started it was basically just people singing hymns and a prayer or two but over the years the television audiences have changed and so has the show. The programs is now more than hymn singing it is now based upon peoples views and how religion has changed their lives. However the show is still basically still centered on Christian hymn singing. Songs of Praise is a very popular program as I watch Songs of Praise every week and I feel that this show is very modern, as the program is based upon Christians singing Hymns and this show acquaints all races to the show but mainly attracts Christians as this show is shown UK but this show does not state explicitly to a particular ethnic group and so this shows that we as an community are not racist. This show however does only include Christian thoughts. The reason this program is popular is that it does not in fact only made for Christians, even if you are secular (non believer of God) I think that if you watch this program it is guaranted to intrest you. This program runs in peak time and is also free-to-air. The program lasts 35 minutes.
