“Mockingbirds don’t do one thing but make music for us to enjoy. They don’t eat up people’s gardens, don’t nest in con cribs, they don’t do one thing but sing their heart out for us. That’s why it’s a sin to kill a mocking bird,” said Atticus Finch from To Kill A Mockingbird. In the story, a black man is convicted of a crime for helping a white women, but in reality, he’s a harmless and selfless person. Atticus’ closing speech helped defend Tom Robinson the best that he could, even if that meant he would put both his and his family’s life on the line. He used both ethical and moral methods that also dealt with emotions to help put a dent into discrimination and racism in the county of Maycomb despite the verdict.

As Atticus starts his closing speech he makes sure to give respect to the jury to increase his reputation. Atticus addressed the jury as “gentlemen”, so they would trust and respect him even though he was defending a black man. He wanted to show them that he still had respect for them He also said “In the name of God, do your duty”. Their “job” is to do their duty which is to tell the truth and to always treat one another equally and to believe in their God. In Conclusion it wasn’t about Atticus reputation that he cared about, but it was Tom Robinson’s that he cared about. He want the jury to see how caring and harmless Tom was and that he wouldn’t do anything to harm them.

Atticus also uses facts and logical information to support his speech. Atticus says that “There is not a person in this courtroom who has never told a lie, who has never done an immoral thing, and there is no man living who has never looked upon a women without desire. He’s saying that just because Tom was a black man doesn’t mean that he’s telling a lie against two white people that everyone has done something immoral to each other. Because all men are created equal, educators will gravely tell you, the children
