NON PROFIT ORGANIZATION ANALYSIS: REFUWEEGEE

INTRODUCTION

Many Non Profit Organizations are formed for the betterment of the society as they seek to solve a given social issue (Lohmann, 2007). Some of the social issues include slave trade, resources allocation and access to healthcare facilities. One NPO based in the UK that has been doing a good job is Refuweegee. This paper seeks to understand Refuweegee more, its founders, some of the challenges and how to solve them and lastly make a social and economic assessment of the organization.

BACKGROUND OF REFUWEEGEE

Refuweegee can be described as a community based charity that is designed to cater for refugees who are arriving in Glasgow and ensure that they are comfortable (Refuwegee, n.d). The charity organization main aim is to ensure that refugees in the region do not lack the basic common essentials for instance clothing and footwear together with a tour map on the Glasgow region. In addition to that, the NPO provides refugees with customized letters from Glasgow residents who ensure that they feel welcome to the region and should not feel alone.

Refuweegee is concerned with several things. The first one is providing essentials for incoming refugees in Glasgow (Loney, 2016). This ensures that the refugees have the basics which include clothing, food and shelter. Refuweegee also provides the refugees with more information about the region and how to maneuver around the region and find most of the basic facilities. Lastly, Refuweegee is engaged in is to provide the Refuwegees with customized welcome notes from the locals that ensure they feel welcomed to the community and that they are part of the community (Loney, 2016).

Refuwegee’s founder is Selina Hales who opened the organization with the intention of assisting refugees (Refuwegee, n.d). She was moved by the problems that new refugees are faced with upon arrival in Glasgow prompting her to start the organization. The Refuwegee team has three main members who apart from Selina the founder include Hannah who is a volunteer that assists in carrying out tasks in the organization together with Sarah who assists in ensuring that the refugees feel welcomed in the community and taking them around (Refuwegee, n,d).

REFUWEGEE SETBACKS AND CHALLENGES

There are various challenges that Refuwegee faces as an NPO. The main challenge is finances. The organization is small and mainly survives on donations from well-wishers. This means that financial stability is an issue for the organization. Currently, the organization has managed to cater for 200 refugees who have arrived in the region. However, due to the limitation of finances involved, the organization cannot do more (Refuwegee, n,d). The area has a high number of refugees who do not have a place to go. Therefore, by increasing their finances, the NPO will be able to increase the number of refugees it can cater to at a time instead of catering to a few at a time due to limited resources.

The next challenge that faces the NPO is managing people. From the background analysis done on the organization, the team members are only three. This means that the team cannot handle many refugees at a time due to the limited number of people. In addition to that, the current team members have to overwork themselves in order to manage all the refugees that have approached them (Refuwegee, n.d). An instance is the work that Sarah does which involves taking the refugees around the community to ensure that they are familiar with the place. She can only control a small crowd at a time because she is the only one involved in the work.

The entrepreneurship theory can best describe this situation in which Selina the founder can be described as a social entrepreneur. One of the main characteristics of the social entrepreneur is that the main objective of the organization is focusing on non-monetary forms (Anheirer, 2014; Bradley et al., 2003). Selina focuses on donations especially in the form of basic goods like clothes and shoes which she reaches out to believers and locals for donations. In addition to that, the other characteristic of the social entrepreneur is that they are strategically located in areas of taste formation. This best describes the organization that is mainly located in the heart of Glasgow whereby refugees who are entering the community cannot get lost and can access the organization.

SOLUTIONS TO THE ISSUE OF MANAGING PEOPLE

Managing people in Refuwegee can be attributed to the small number of people working in the organization together with lack of enough time to manage people. The organization is suffering from lack of enough volunteers to assist in carrying out some of the major tasks in the organization. However, it is important to note that when it comes to volunteer management, the motivation of the volunteers has to be non-monetary and intrinsic (Young and Steinberg, 1995). This means that the volunteers have to be committed to the main cause of the organization. In the case of Refuwegee, the volunteers have to be committed to the main cause which is ensuring refugees in Glasgow feel welcomed and do not lack the basic necessity. Despite the organization being small, one effective way to motivate the volunteers is to ensure that they understand their worthiness in the organization and the role that they play in order to contribute to the goals of the organization (Doherty et al., 2009). This solution will assist in motivating the volunteers and ensuring that the rate of turnover has decreased in the organization.

The next solution to the main problem facing Refuweegee is to introduce performance related pay. The PRP will ensure that the rate of turnover has declined and that the volunteers are motivated to perform their duties. According to Baluch (2011), performance per pay is mainly used in relation to offering compensation for reaching specific targets in the organization. In the case of Refuweegee, one specific target that can be used to compensate the volunteers of the organization is compensation after catering for every 50 refugees that approach the organization. Dealing with refugees who feel scared and are not sure whether they will feel welcomed is such a daunting task. Therefore, performance per pay for volunteers of the organization will greatly assist in harnessing the motivation of the individuals thus assisting the organization in achieving their main tasks.
