1.0 Executive Summary

MPH Group Malaysia SdnBhd is one of the leading groups in the education industry and having a presence with book retailing and online retailing services as well as being involved in the printing, publishing and distribution of books and library services that cater the demand of customers across the country.

The main objective of the research was to discover those markets which were untapped and also increase the product reach to the remote areas customers. The company overall services, promotion strategies, availability of products public awareness of brand were investigated. The researchers have to grab the opportunity and confront threats.

The information collected in research helps in maintaining a good customer relationship with the existing clients and customers. It also helps in determining the main retailers and flagship products should be launch. The research also facilitates the marketing and promotional strategies which helps the company to increase its loyal customer base.

A proper survey was conducted by questionnaires with hard copy. In the survey the respondents in University were touched with a proper questionnaire which was prepared to find out the relevant information. One of the major aspects of this project is to increase of financial and operational efficiency for MPH Book store in the market.

The overall study in this project involves to enhance the MPH Bookstore brand image in terms of quality and services in this huge competition. There are some recommendations and suggestions in the research in this report to make this growth at higher pace .The pie chart, bar chat and table representation of the data which helps in understanding the market scenario for the company.

2.0 Background of the Study

MPH Bookstores currently has 32 outlets in Malaysia and four in Singapore.  In the area of Johor the company had about 4 bookstores which located in Aero Mall, Taman University, Giant Hypermarket and City Square. It has a heavy presence in the City Square. MPH Group Malaysia Sdn Bhd is a Malaysian group of companies best known for its book retailing and online retailing services as well as being involved in the printing, publishing and distribution of books and library services in Malaysia and Singapore. MPH has also branched out into the online book retailing in 2000, with the highly popular MPH Online portal providing a platform for customers to have a safe and easy way of purchasing products from MPH.  MPH is a haven for all bookworms. It’s also a great place to shop for stationery, gift, educational toys and magazines.

3.0 Problem Statement

Nowadays peoples thought better education is very necessary for all to go ahead in the life and get success. It develops confidence and helps building personality of a person. MPH Bookstore is one of the business that sells books, stationary and others.

The researchers found that MPH Bookstore had confront some fatal problems which brought damages to company. One of the problems is most of the people preferred to read books in E-Book through internet because of the reason of it’s free for download to read. (Refer to Appendices 10.1)

Some consumers preferred to photocopy the book rather than buy books in book store. The greater cost copyright of publishers that brought the effect of the high selling price of books. In this situation become the obstruction of the consumer who not willing spending high cost in purchasing books.

There was numerous of competitors in Johor that become a threat of MPH Bookstore. The main competitors are Popular Bookstore, Talent Bookstore, Harris Bookstore, Sin Sin Bookstore Sdn. Bhd, and Book Talk (M) Sdn. Bhd. (Refer to Appendices 10.2 )

In another side, there is an opportunity that affects the sales of MPH book store which is some consumers prefer to buy book in book store rather than borrow books from library. The resources of book unavailable in library caused them purchase for their own use. The consumers who purchase the books can read over and over again in anytime without worry about the returning of the books to the library. (Refer to Appendices 10.3)

4.0 Research Objectives

  • To determine the variety of book that customer preferred.
  •  To investigate the overall performance of MPH customer service.
  • To examine what kind of promotion preferred by customers.
  • To determine the awareness of MPH Book store.

The College had about 2000 students. The researchers only selected 200 students as sample to conduct this survey. The advantages of sampling over census studies were less compelling when the population was small and variability within the population was high. Sampling provided greater speed of data collection. If the researchers conducted survey among 2000 students, the time consuming will be longer. Sample also provided greater accuracy of results than population.

The researchers had been applied non-probability sampling instead of probability sampling. The researchers to conduct this survey had used the convenience sampling method and quota sampling method. The researchers used the convenience sampling method to conduct the survey through informal pools of friend and ‘on the street’ interviews.

The researchers had been applied another sampling was quota sampling. The amount of participants required from each faculty was set in advance by the researchers. Each faculty the researchers selected 10% of all students from that particular faculty. For example, there were about 900 students from faculty of business management. The researchers selected 90 students as samples.
