Organizational Development

Crys Tel must keep up with the advances with technology in the telecommunications industry. In order to prepare and succeed in their vision “to be the first choice for telephony, data, and voice services in Illinois”, they must use organizational development to build a strong foundation from within. Crys Tel needed to first identify the areas needing development which was done through strong leadership, surveying and monitoring of the company’s departments.

The surveys chosen were focused around the employees because the employees are the powerhouse of the company and have the ability to increase production, ideas, stability, and success.

Once issues were targeted, development was made through small changes and adjustments in procedures and attitude to slowly improve the situations. So far, these changes have increased effective productivity and also identified more room for improvement. “Organization development is concerned with helping managers plan change in organizing and managing people that will develop requisite commitment, coordination, and competence. Its purpose is to enhance both the effectiveness of organizations and the well-being of their members through planned interventions in the organization’s human processes, structures, and systems, using knowledge of behavioral science and its intervention methods.” (Kinicki & Kreitner, 2004, Ch. 19, p. 31)

Motivation through Goal Setting

Crys Tel is comprised of five major departments. There is a major difference between the three successful departments and the two unsuccessful ones. The successful departments have a goal-oriented structure where the team is working together to accomplish the same objective.

While goals are set in the less productive departments, the focus is not based around finding the best way to obtain those goals through communication, risk taking and other methods. “Successful people tend to have one thing in common. Their lives are goal oriented.” (Kinicki & Kreitner, 2004, Ch. 9, p. 44)

Lewin’s Change Model

Crys Tel follows the Lewin Change Model while trying to improve production in the Marketing and Sales and Delivery departments. By slowly introducing new methods such as opening communication, encouragement to make decisions, implementing conflict resolution solutions and increased training, employees slowly adapt after being unfrozen.

Change is monitored to see if further work is needed, then the team’s behavior is refrozen by continuing to use the new practices. “Lewin developed a three-stage model of planned change which explained how to initiate, manage, and stabilize the change process.10 The three stages
