Groups Pg. 2

Introduction

This paper will explore how teams and work group will work or not at FMC Green River. We will also explore the differences in leadership at both Aberdeen and Green River. Leadership skills will be discussed so as to come up with the best case for Green River, also the communication difference between both companies will be discussed, and how to best utilize Aberdeen communication at Green River.

Work Group and Teams

Aberdeen is already working in small team groups. They get together twice a week. On Monday they discuss what is going on work wise, and on Thursday they talked about what ever they want too. Each team can do every job in the facility. When they have something come up they get together and discuss what to do. The teams work very close with each other as the facility only has 100 workers. They have put up 2 charts in their lunch room to keep the employees focused on the goals for the week. (Clawson, 2005)

Green River could start the same concept, but with them having 1150 employees, and they produce different items, and when they start making their groups, they will have to keep in mind the other areas of the company. What may work for one team in this plant may not work for another team in the same plant. This is because of all the items they make here. They are going to have to split the company into divisions that can work will each other in that certain area of the company.

Aberdeen having just 100 employees can work with informal work groups because of their small size, and the family orientated environment. Where as Green River

has so many employees, they would need to go with a more formal groups. This would make it easier to make sure that the teams are getting the work done that needs to be done in a company this size. Teams need to be the stressed word here as there are too many lines making different things in Green River, so it will require more teams to get this facility moving toward the Aberdeen concept. Green River will have to be patience with setting up their facility like Aberdeen, but as they are opening three new places they can start using what Aberdeen does in their company. Because these companies will be new in with be easier to start the team concept from the beginning. The manager will still have to be involved with these processes and learn right along with the employees. His willingness to learn and teach is a very important key to getting this rolling.

Leadership

The leadership at both Aberdeen and Green River vary. Both the leaders of the plants do have the privilege of having flexibility on how they run their companies. They also have to a link to the business as a whole in the image and objectives, which make them, have similar values. As Ken Dailey looked at Roger Campbell he realized that his principles and values went along with what Roger Campbell is doing. (Clawson, 2005 pg.1) Aberdeen leadership is based on trust as they carefully selected people who could manage themselves. The leaders are not there to decide what everyone is doing. They stand back and work as a team. They share ideas and communicate with each other to reach the goals they have in common. Roger Campbell also gets out on the floor and works right along the side of the team mates. This also helps to motivate the team members and let them know that he is a part of the team too. Kenneth Dailey has so many

employees. They have supervisors that monitor the employees, and then report back to Kenneth Dailey. The employees at this plant depend on Kenneth and the supervisors to help them do there job. They are assigned a certain job and stick with it. They are not able to freely express themselves on improving areas, or knowing other areas in this facility. At Aberdeen the employees are encouraged in self-motivation. At Green River they are just doing their jobs that they are assigned too.

The changes at Green River to match the leadership skills at Aberdeen will have to make many changes. They will have to pick who can be training to be team leaders. They will then need to learn about the self management in the work places. After breaking the company up into groups, and people have been picked to start being trained as team leaders, the management could start classes on this type of concept. They will also have to learn about trust. Without in the project of changing Green River will fail. When employees learn that this company wants to go forward and create a team based concept, we believe they will be excited. They will need to learn about how they will be responsible for their actions, this may scare them some. It will take the manager to let them know that it is alright to make mistakes and that he will be there to help them. As they become more confident in the own abilities it will get better. They will start trusting others the more they are working with them. It will be up to the manager to find ways to help the employees get motivated to start a new era in the company they have been working at. The manager will be very important in this part. Rewards for those doing a great job will be helpful to such as certificates of achievement and employee of the month. This is very motivating and makes the employees feel better at what they are

doing. The manager will also have to start sharing information with the people as this will show them that he is willing to help them succeed. This will help him gain the trust of the employees. We see also that this will help the employees
