Claude Monet is best known as one of the most outstanding Impressionist

painters, however many of his paintings have romantic characteristics. Some of his early works can even bee characterized as true romantic paintings. Monet’s paintings contain brilliant color’s in numerous shades, however he only used six different colors. One of the colors he was opposed to using was black. Instead he used dark blues,

purples, or greens when he need to shade or have dark areas in his paintings. Late in his career Monet developed cataract disease in both eyes. This disease makes the eyes see colors differently. Whites turn to yellows, blues and purples turn to reds and

oranges and greens turn to yellow-greens. Monet continued painting but in order to use the correct colors for his paintings he labeled his colors. Monet continued painting until a few months before he died. Today Monet is still regarded as one of the best painters of all time.

Monet’s painting `La Pointe de la Heve’ depicts the beach at Sanite Adresse near Monet’s home in La Havre, which was at that time a popular tourist destination. The brushwork in the painting shows Monet’s determination to depict particular images of this simple scene. His rigorous observation can be recognized through the delicate colors of the beach and the ribbons of sunlight on the horizon. Monet also incorporates different natural textures as well as changing effects of lighting. This image shows people close to nature through the small row boat as well as the boats dotting the horizon and the house positioned on the hillside. The light colors of the ocean and beach provide a beautiful contrast with the darker colors of the hillside. The beauty, representation of nature, colors, and details in `La Pointe de la Heve’ classify it as an exceptional piece of romantic art.
