Diversity Project:

The assigned label that i received was lesbians, in receiving this label i could very easily start making a list of stereotypes and characteristics because most of them are very common when it comes to lesbians however i don’t agree with them all. Lesbian women face many different stereotypes in America most are very judgemental. We should never judge a book by it’s cover. In my opinion the biggest stereotypes for lesbian women would have to be that they hate men or haven’t met the “right guy” or possibly been molested by another women which could lead them to attracting to the same sex. When in a same sex relationship lesbian women have to sometime define who is going to play the role as the male. Doing this activity in class made me a little more open minded and realize how judgemental our world really is just because a person is gay you shouldn't treat them any differently. I never knew that lesbainas had so many stereotypes i just always thought that people felt like they shouldn't get married but doing this activity showed me plenty of more. Lesbian women have to deal with getting stereotyped everyday and in my opinion they don’t deserve it nobody wants to live their life knowing that they will get judge everyday because of who they are. When i started to list the stereotypes to my group they immediately guessed what my label was. My group felt as though that all of the stereotypes that i had listed describe a lesbian women very well. However they was able to give me a few more things to add to the list of stereotypes. The true identity that i received was a bit shocking it stated ‘“I am a 43-year old mother of two. It was only recently that i decided to come out to my husband and kids. I have had it with people who say i shouldn't have custody of my children because they are “unsafe’ with me.” When reading this true identity the first thing that i wondered was why wait so late to come out to your family, however maybe she just wasn't ready and tried to keep her family together.
