A writer or speaker’s central ideals about different beliefs create opportunities for change whilst at the same time maintaining core values present during the time. These distinctive voices also offer a variety of perspectives on the world which the speaker or writer has. John F Kennedys speech, Inaugural Address of 1961 and poem by Joanne Burns ‘public places, ’ both portray views of a speaker and how they feel about certain issues that have risen during that time.

Distinctive voices allow speakers to establish immense authenticity to an audience in order to deliver important messages. Through the use of this type of voice the speaker is able to empower an audience to share similar perspectives and also allows the speaker to justify present or futuristic visions. In the speech, JKF speaks about how one of the main ways to eliminate threats of communism and The Cold War which was a point in time in which many Americans lived in fear and danger of war, was by the unification of the American citizens in order to become a strong nation. A powerful chiasmus is established when Kennedy states, “… my fellow Americans, ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country”. The idea of patriotism is further extended as Kennedy appeals to the citizens of American to serve and attempts to create a positive change for the betterment of the country. Kennedy is further made credible through the metaphor “in the past those who foolishly sought power by riding the back of the tiger ended up inside” which exemplified the powerful nature of America. Furthermore, Kennedy speaks about things that individuals faced due to the cold war “born in this century, tempered by war, disciplined by hard and bitter peace.” This illustrates the struggles and tragedies that cannot be forgotten that were faced due to the war. Also, it is through this pathos appeal that Kennedy is able to provide home and sympathise with the entire nation. He further appeals to the people’s emotions and perspectives to show them that even after all the misery that has been brought upon them, as a nation they can stand together in order to preserve the might of America.

Kennedy bases most his speech around the war at the time which he did in order to aim for world peace and convey his attitude to the audience to portray where he stood. As he was the president at the time he had to make sure that the country knew he was supporting them. He not only depicted his intentions but also Americas pure intention through personifying history as the “final judge of our good deeds.” He also encourages world peace through the use of alliteration in, “dark and destructive” to create an image in the audience’s mind of the horrors of war and how world peace is extremely important or also else it would “engulf all of mankind.” Also through the use of anthesis, which at the same time provided logos of how it would be a lot more beneficial for the country if they worked as a whole rather than separately, “explore what problems unite.” This overall showed the exact stance of John F Kennedy and his visions for the country for upcoming issues.
