One very important aspect of Conflict Resolution is to identify a safe place for negotiation, as outlined by the Office of Quality Improvement & Office of Human Resource Development (www.ohrd.wisc.edu/onlinetraining/ resolution/stepsoverview.htm).

A neutral , private room that is not "owned" by either party in the conversation would be a safe place in which each stakeholder could feel comfortable taking the risks that are usually involved in honest communication about important, meaningful topics and issues. An affirming environment where the atmosphere is positive and respectful will allow for the parties involved to be able to communicate more effectively. It is also necessary to establish an appropriate and acceptable time to hold the meeting. This can be especially helpful when there are significant power differences between the parties involved, or when one party requires additional support and assistance to effectively participate in the negotiation.

It is critical that the facilitator of the meeting address the ground rules for the discussion is his or her opening statement to ensure the likelihood of a civil, constructive dialogue. These ground rules will be statements that reflect people's best intentions
