Author James Baldwin, writer of such novels as Go tell it on the Mountain and Giovanni’s room, once said, “Children have never been very good at listening to their elders, but they have never failed to imitate them. Emulating my parents, especially my father was natural and easy. He was a football coach, smart and a great motivator. My father and Doc Kries, my college Strength and Conditioning coach, were major influences on my decision to becoming a teacher. Coaching football at the high school level is my main reason for becoming a teacher. I’ve always enjoyed working with teenaged youths, so educating them in the same school that I’m coaching sports in would be beneficial for both the student and me. That is the second reason I want to become a teacher. The third reason is being able to take a few extra months off from work to be with my family and friends and a little relax time for me.

Coaching sports especially high school sports has given me the opportunity to work with you student athletes. There is no greater joy then having a past athlete I’ve coached come up to me and say thanks. Thanks for believing in me, teaching me what it took to get to the next level and instilling in me the leadership qualities that have helped me on and off the playing field. In return being around a younger generation helps me feel younger almost to the point that I find myself acting silly along with the kids. Their energy and youthfulness makes being a coach and future educator motivates me to improve my coaching techniques and skills and wanting to further educate students.

Educating youths and providing them with the academic know how to get into college or the skills to go out into the workforce is not enough. I would be cheating the students if I didn’t open their eyes to the unlimited potential that they possess. Help them set goals and provide them with the tools necessary to ascertain those goals. Dealing with different personalities, listening to their problems, accomplishments, concerns and dreams of their future plans is what makes me want to be a teacher. It reminds me of my youth, when I used to spend my summer vacation playing, having fun, dreaming about out future and dreading having to go back to school when the vacation is over.
