4 basic functions of the nervous system

  1. Control of maintain a conscious of aware static
  2. Transmit sensory STIMULI to the brain for interpatation
  3. Control motor function/ transmitting motor impulses to muscles for voluntary/ involuntary movement
  4.  Control body functions thru the autonomic nervous system

The central nervous system consists of the brain/ and spinal cord with 3 layers of protective membranes called “Meninges.”

Cerebrum- Outer most portion of the brain. The cerebrum occupies almost all cranial cords. It controls specific body functions.

Cerebellum- Also called “The small brain” is located is the posterior / inferior aspect of the cranium. It coordinates muscle activity and maintains balance thru impulses from the eyes and ears

Brainstem- Contains the “Mesencephalon”, “Pons”, and the “Medulla Oblongata.”

Medulla Oblongata- contains 3 major control centers

  1. Respiratory Center- Controls the Depth/ Rate of respiration
  2. Cardiac Center- Controls/ Regulates heart rate and force of contractions of the ventricles
  3. Vasomotor Center- Producers dilation and constructing of blood vessels

The spinal cord is 18” long and is an extension of the brainstem. Major function conducts of nerve impulses

Peripheral Nervous System – It’s composed of the nerves located outside the spinal cord and brain

Afferent Nerves- They carry sensory information from the body to the spinal cord and brain

Efferent Nerves- Carry motor info from the brain/ spinal cord to the body

Voluntary Nervous System- Influences the activity of the skeletal muscles (voluntary muscles) movements
