ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

“Research paper? What’s that? Is it hard?” These are the researchers’ most common questions before they started working on their research paper. The Research paper is one of the hardest tasks that researchers have ever faced in their entire life as a student. In their task, they were able to find their respondents to test their patience, their knowledge, to push themselves in their limits and to determine who will give a hand for them. Although, even some of them almost tried to give up yet they still chose to continue their work and prove that they can do their very best no matter how hard their task is. Every researcher has his/her experience. However, whenever they look back to their experiences, it made them happier and more confident to face every task even if it’s hard. Some of the researchers encountered some teachers and students who are not participating in their task. Although, they didn’t participate, the researchers’ patience was tested. Despite of these challenges, the researchers succeeded and for that they are thankful to many people.

The researchers would like to thank a lot of people behind this research, who helped and participated with them to their research paper. First, the group leader of team Recto and the assistant leader would like to thank their group members who consumed their time and effort to participate and cooperate to do their work. And then, they would also like to thank some students who don’t smoke, who helped them to trace the smokers who are needed in this survey Fourth, to all the teachers that gave them spare time to do the survey. Fifth, to the parents of the researchers that gave them financial assistance to their needs in making and preparing their research paper and also for printing out 150 copies of questionnaire. Sixth, to their research advisers that always gives some pieces of advice, motivation and inspirational message which encourage them enough to do their part as researchers and also, shaped them to becoming great students in the near future. Now, lastly, to the one and only God who is giving them strength and intelligence in making their task.

In doing this research, the researchers realized how hard it is to conduct a survey especially when the students in a class are hard-headed and not listening. They learned that cooperation is important and needed because if all the group members will cooperate the research would become easier to accomplish. They learned how to be patient, how to focus and how to manage their time. They also realized that it is very hard to think what they will write in their research and they need time to think about the right words to use. They realized that what they are doing is not a competition at all times, but it’s a test of a character of every researcher.

CHAPTER 1

  1. INTRODUCTION

In Rizal High School, school administrators, teachers, students, school guards and also the utility workers of the school have different kinds of problem due to the misbehavior of the students. The researchers had observed that smoking is a huge problem in this society; be it in school, outside the mall, at the sidewalk of the street or in other places.

Smoking is a practice in which a substance, most commonly tobacco, is burned and the smoke is tasted or inhaled. Smoking was probably first practiced by the indigenous peoples of the Western Hemisphere. This is originally used in religious rituals, and in some instances for medicinal purposes, smoking and the use of tobacco became a widespread practice by the late 1500s. Tobacco was introduced into Europe by the explorers of the New World; however, many rulers prohibited its use and penalized offenders.

Rizal High School students had grown to know that cigarette is prohibited in every school. However, the students still have their chances to bring their cigarettes and hide it in their bra, socks, necktie, boxer or shorts and usually in their wallet just to smoke inside the campus. Sometimes, even when they have classes, they still choose to cut their class just to smoke which is why some smokers can be found inside the comfort room, corridor and even in some corners of the school. Some students who smoke start this horrible habit maybe because of peer pressure, family problem, stress and personal issues.
