American History has influenced the literature written in America for many years. Some of the best literature was written when important events were occurring in America. When hard times in America are taking place, people feel the need to write, and express what is going on inside their heads. Although events in America were not always positive, people found a way to use the times to create beautiful literature. Some of the most influential literature was written in the Modernist, War, and Contemporary literature times. The pieces that will be gone over are "The Great Gatsby", "The Last True Story I'll ever tell", and "Air Conditioners".

This piece of literature was expressed as a film, and a great one at that. The Great Gatsby was originally written by F. Scott Fitzgerald. It was part of Modernist Literature which was taking place through the 1900's to the 1950s. Modernist Literature arose from Romanticism literature, which seems to make sense if you look back on it. A main part of it was that the characters in this literature were isolated. It also used a lot of fragmentation in the writing. In this movie stream of consciousness writing was used. "And when I was in the delivery room, waking up from the ether, I asked the nurse whether it was a boy or a girl. She said it was a girl - and I turned my head to the side and cried. And then I said, I hope she grows up to be a pretty little fool. That's about the best a girl can hope for these days, to be a pretty little fool." This is a good example of stream of consciousness.

War literature has been apart of America since the 1914s. In The Last True Story I'll Ever Tell, written by a war veteran it is clearly understandable too see what was going on in America at the time. This man had been in Iraq, and was telling a story about how he shot a child. The senselessness of war was expressed excellently. The descriptive detail that was used
