I believe that compassion is in the heart of unity which makes our society whole. Defined as a deep awareness of the suffering of another coupled with the wish to relieve it, there are very few who seem to not feel compassion; however, to be compassionate teaches that person compassion. My compassion is great enough that I have stopped and help elderly couples on the side of the road and a few times given a few dollars to cover the bill of a young mother in line at the grocery store. Brilliantly, Frederick Buchner suggested that "Compassion is sometimes the fatal capacity for feeling what it is like to live inside somebody else's skin. It is the knowledge that there can never really be any peace and joy for me until there is peace and joy finally for you too". I furthermore believe that the capability to suppress anger holds another key in the success of our culture. Some assume that to be angry is to be dominated; alternatively, others declare that without anger there would be no forgiveness. I was angry with my son's father for a long time but I chose not to be dominated by someone who wasn't even in my life. Queen Elizabeth I stated "anger makes dull men witty, but it keeps them poor". Nothing will ever be gained from anger. Finally, I believe without charity the suffering of our underprivileged would only continue to grow. Andrew Carnegie determined "One of the serious obstacles to the improvement of our race is indiscriminate charity." Every year I donate clothes and toys to the Salvation Army, money to the MDA and I am currently growing my hair long enough to donate to Locks of Love. It doesn't take much, just the knowledge of what resources are limited in our society and the thought to care.
