Veterinarian

One time when I was a kid my dog ate a lot of chocolate and I was scared for her and I wanted to help her but I didn’t know what to do so save her. I’ve always wanted to know how to help others so I could help them instead of sit back. I’ve decided to be a veterinarian, veterinarians work with all sorts of animals from cows to canaries. I’ve always liked animals and I’m excited to tell you all about what a veterinarian does. First I’m going to tell you the stats of this career then I’m going to tell you what the education requirements for this job is. And finally I am going to tell you the Job outlook on being a veterinarian.

Being a veterinarian is hard, you have to do lots of work and fast so the family or person can have their animal back in their home. Being a Veterinarian requires you to have a lot of time to work on animals. Such as you have to test their blood for disease, preform surgeries and an everyday checkup with an animal. To be a Veterinarian you have to have be strict discipline, determination, and dedication. You have to deal with the families and the different types of people who might be grieving. The workplace is that the veterinarian works is a building inside where a lot of smelly animals are waiting around for their turn. Being inside that building can be very loud especially with dogs barking and whining. There are a lot of instruments the vet needs to be familiar with so they can use them properly on the animal. These people must be 100% sure on what they are doing so they don’t mess up and hurt the animal. The waiting room is probably the most chaotic place in the workplace. Sometime the vet gets called to a house or a farm to help an animal that cannot move or be move because of its size or severity of the injury. So that means you have to be willing to be able to travel for the job. The typical hours that a veterinarian works is usually 40 hours a week including weekends. Which gets you around $75,890 a year that number is the average of all of the vets in the state of Nebraska.  Being a Veterinarian lets you have 2-4 hours of paid vacation also paid sick leave. Unfortunately there are no retirement plans. According to vet.purdue.edu if you become a vet you have to pay for your own retirement through your 401k.  Some potential employers that could hire me are the Wahoo veterinarian clinic called Green Acres.  That is just the one nearby there are tons of clinics. But they only hire the best they can get their hands on because more and more students want to become a veterinarian.

Next I am going to talk about the requirements of being a Vet. To become a Veterinarian you have to first graduate high school then Acquire a bachelor's degree, preferably in biology, biochemistry, animal science, or zoology then, take the Graduate Record Examination and score high enough to get into medical school after that then you have to attend medical school and graduate with a Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine. Then complete an internship or residency program. After that you have to pass the North American Veterinary Licensing Exam. Then finally pass your state's licensing boards. I know that sounds like a lot of work but I pays of in the end you get lots of money and a fun job to do that you get to spend with animals and help them. One place you can go to go to college is at Purdue University that is in Indiana. It takes four years to complete the bachelor’s degree program at the university and you have to have an evaluator to enter as a veterinarian student. The cost is around $147,000 for the bachelor degree. In Purdue that is the reside price the non-resident is $247,000. That’s a lot of money just for schooling. Usually the average degree cost $90,000.  Purdue is the best college of Veterinarian Schooling in the country it is their “Bread and Butter.”  The next college I would like to talk about is University of Nebraska. Their Location is in Lincoln, Nebraska. Here they have the same length of program of a four year bachelors and the same requirements as Purdue University.  The only thing different with this program is the GPA of the high school student. Currently it is the minimum of a 2.5 GPA to enter as a veterinarian.  The University of Nebraska website doesn’t say how much it costs for the bachelor’s degree.  The only thing special about this college is it is very close to where I live so it wouldn’t be that bad to go to college at the University of Nebraska.  In this Job, you have to be determined to do what you can to help an animal and never give up. That college costs a lot to go to college there you have to be able to keep going even after having student debt.

This career will be continued to be used but more and more people want to become them. They are going to move up nine percent from 2014 to 2024. It is going to be difficult to be getting a job for this career. It’s going to be especially hard for the companion animal care, which is like caring for dogs, cats, birds. All of those types of animals. But this is the type of people to not give up and perceive their dream they will work hard to get the job.  There are some positives and negatives of the job. The positive parts of this job is helping animals when they are sick, hurt, or just a regular checkup and you get to see the animal. You get paid pretty well for working with animals. Another good thing is when you have your own pet and it gets sick you can look at it and identify what’s wrong with your animal right away. Especially when diseases that can happen quick and it is already too late like cancer or heart worms. Bad things about this career is amount of veterinarians there will be in the future. It will be very hard to find a job. You have to watch animals die and you sometimes have to hurt them and you don’t want to. I think it would be hard watching the animal in misery and you have to help it just for it to live for a few extra months or weeks just for the family. Another bad thing is having to work on the weekends but that’s what you have to do when you are a doctor for animals because something might happen to an animal and you have to go help them. This makes this job basically 24/7 even when it is the weekend. This means like to time for friends or stuff like that over the weekend or very rare because of work.    Being a veterinarian is physically and mentally demanding you have to be able to hold a dog or something and then quickly figure out what to do to the animal. This job can benefit society because when someone’s pet gets hurt or is sick or having to put them down when they have health concerns and it isn’t right for them to live like they are, you can take them under your wing and help them.
