People are born into either a man or a woman in the world. However, this does not mean to an end about sexuality, people of different characteristics and personalities make it much more complicated about the sexual intentions. Thanks to its diverse and ultimate features, sexuality has been considered an endless and original theme for writers. Five stories of different styles: “The Horse Dealer’s Daughter”, “The Rocking - Horse Winner” by D.H. Lawrence, “Araby” by James Joyce, “Luke Baldwin’s Vow” by Morley Callaghan, “A Haunted House” by Virginia Woolf, flexibly express the theme of sexuality in them. And the theme sexuality has been deeply and thoughtfully exploited.

In fact, sexuality is a never-ending in literature. Sexuality does not simply mean gender: male, female or homosexual but it covers a wide range of meanings: family relationships, dating, sexual behavior, physical attraction, or body image. To some extends, people are quite sensitive when they bring up any subject involving sexuality, but this is not applied  in literature, where all the barriers and obstacles are lifted and the freedom have endless power. Sexuality gives themes for the originality of the authors. In “The Horse Dealer’s Daughter”, D.H Lawrence argues that sexuality affects the love between Jack and Mabel. Jack who saves Mabel from drowning is now dominant by Mabel’s demand for love. Although being strangers at first, they become soon committed to loving each other. The heroic rescue of a man like Jack turns into a life-long commitment. This is quite illogical because Jack and Mabel’s meeting is a fatal incident but there is something emotional growing in them, which leads to the proposal of marriage. In another story – “The Rocking-Horse Winner”, D.H Lawrence makes use of the sexuality in a different way. This story depicts that the father is incapable of supporting his family and his wife is somewhat desperate and lacking in emotions for her children. To save his mother from despair and please her, the son tries his best to make more money by telling which horse will be the winner in the upcoming race. Sexuality is not explicit in some ways, but it can be seen that the boy proves himself as a “real man” who will be able to save his mother from being hopeless and his sexuality through the rocking horse. He tries to compete for his mother’s affection, which eventually leads to his tragic death after fulfilling his hope of winning the race. Sexuality is also seen as the individual actualization of someone. In “Araby” by James Joyce, a boy of Araby starts a journey towards adulthood. He was first attracted by beauty of his friend’s sister. He promised to buy something for her when he arrived at a shopping center known Araby. However sweet the promise was, the fact appeared a bitter fact he had to face – he could not buy anything for his beloved. Drawing from this situation, we find that sexuality brings us an ideal image of emotion but due to it, we can fail to cope with our own situation. Another story, “A Haunted House” by Virginia Woolf shows a moving story of the ever-lasting love of a ghost couple. Sexuality here is the emotional relationship. Even after their death, their love remained in the house, remembering the good times they had. Actually it is treasure that can never be stolen. Sexuality is also the family relationships and people’s affection to others. Luke shows all his respect to his uncle. However, the fact is that his uncle is so materialistic and realistic that he ignores the friendship between his nephew and the dog. Luke saves the dog, but has to work hard to afford him. Sexuality is expressed in the form of kindness in this story.
