The Crucible Theme Essay

Arthur Millers play, The Crucible is a story of the with hunt in Salem Ma. The town breaks out in hysteria because a group of young girls spread a lie to get out of trouble. Some of the characters must battle there own desires and morals to stay alive or to do what's right.

John Proctor struggles with many problems through out the story. He beats himself up over committing adultery with Abi. Further more his wife has never really forgiven him and brings it up all the time. Abi called Goody Proctor a witch because she wanted him to herself, not because she actually was one. He later has a bigger problem with his pride because he was accused as well. He confesses to being a witch because he wants to live, but Danforth wants him to write it down and sign it. He says "how may I live with out my name? I have given you my soul, leave me my name!" When he doesn't sign, they sentence him to death. All because of a little lie to save there own head, so many innocent were killed.

Mary Warren was afflicted by inner conflict and she is easily swayed by the threats of Abi. She goes along with the crowd and thinks she has power now by being an official of the court. She finds it much easier to jump on the bandwagon then to stand up for what is right and what she knows is right. Mary proclaims that john made her lie about everything. She thinks by doing this she can lift the burden of blame off her shoulders. Now she will have to live with her knowing she was responsible for some innocent life being taken.

Reverend Hale was brought to the town to figure out who was "afflicting" the girls. At first he was convinced that there was a problem, but as the plot thickened he realized that the girls pulled the wool over his eyes and lied about everything. He tried to get threw to Danforth that something is wrong with what the girls are saying. He knows now that
