Every day, a multitude of drivers are involved in an accident. Many of these are caused by distraction, careless driving, alcohol, etc. Some drivers may be inexperienced and could have made a mistake while driving, causing the accident to happen. Automobile insurance companies charge a higher premium for those drivers who have not had a substantial amount of driving time under their belt. Why is it acceptable to allow companies to charge considerably more for an inexperienced driver? Would it matter if the new driver was forty-five years old? Do insurance companies really lower rates once a person turns twenty-five?

I am interested in investigating this matter because I am charged $500.00 more than my husband for my insurance because I am rated as an "inexperienced operator." The charges are outrageous because they have nothing to do with my personal driving. Instead, charges are given based on statistics involving new drivers. In my opinion, my cautious driving exceeds that of many people on the road. The rate of insurance should be a reflection of past driving history. If there is no recorded history, there should be a personalized evaluation that determines the rate of insurance.

There are a handful of circumstances that can lower the cost of insurance. For example, automobile insurance companies often reduce rates after a specific number of years pass without an accident on one's record or when an individual reaches a certain age. I know that some rates differ between states depending on the ratio of accidents documented per year. Additionally, some premiums change depending on vehicle make, and even the color of the car. Other discounts may apply for military service members and for students with high grades.

I hope to further examine the issue at hand to find out what the statistics are regarding young or inexperienced drivers. I would also like to investigate the rates in Virginia compared to other states, and to
