Caravaggio (1571-1610)

Michelangelo was an Italian extraordinary artist active in Rome, Naples and Malta. Also he was a rebel. Caravaggio was born in Milan and his father, Fermo Merisi, was a household administrator and architect-decorator. He was poor and after his father died he inherited money from his family. He is commonly placed in the Baroque school. In 1592 Caravaggio went to Rome to develop his technical skills and to get information about painting styles. Then he left the Rome after painted many works. He was input money at this period. Caravaggio's personal life was turbulent. He was often arrested by police in 1606 because he murdered someone. Then he went to prison in Malta. However, he wanted to go to prison in Rome but he could not come back to Rome. Caravaggio died miserably on 18 July 1610 and he was not even 40 years old. He was a religious man but maybe he was homosexual. In 1599, he affected by Del Monte and Caravaggio contracted to decorate the” Contarelli Chapel” which is first bi commission. Caravaggio’s techniques were tenebrism and chiaroscuro. He used uncompromising realism in his art so he took normal people to his art. He did dramatic and violent paintings. One of the famous paintings is “Judith Beheading Holofernes.” In the picture Judith seeks out Holofernes in his tent, makes him drunk, and then beheads him. Caravaggio chose dramatic subject in the picture. The upturned eyes of Holofernes indicate that he is not alive and he was between life and death.
