Roger Chillingworth was a cruel wicked man, full of bitterness, and hatred. At one time he was also a very intelligent man. He was once a man who was very civilized and respected. He came from England, and was captured by the Indians. From this experience he learned to concoct all kinds of different herbs and medicines to help sickness. When he escaped from the Indians, he went to the colony where his wife was supposed to be waiting for him. He found her with a child from another man. This flung him into an outrage and changed his whole personality. He became a devilish man set on revenge at whatever the cost. He vowed to find the man who did this and to punish him. He began his search and soon found out that the father of this child was Rev. Mr. Dimmesdale. Mr. Dimmesdale was a very sick man and Chillingworth used this as an excuse to move into his home and become his physician. He began to torment this man with everything in him. He did all of this under the cover of, "I and Rev. Dimmesdale are very close friends and I am also his physician." , but he was really a fiend in the disguise of a friend and physician. He became so evil that it became hard for his wife to recognize him, his looks became more aged and ugly, his body became disheveled and his back crooked. The bitterness, which was on the inside, began to manifest itself on the outside. He hated every living, breathing thing on earth. He despised humans, and especially hated Mr.Dimmesdale. He lived on this way until the death of Mr. Dimmesdale, and a short while fter the death of Mr. Dimmesdale, he also died. He died as a bitter wicked man who had once lived in peace, but had let the devil take control of his life.
