Public Relations Paper

Public relations are a process to persuade the public to change his or her attitudes and actions. Persuading the public could be done through media, like newspapers, magazines, and television. The Wikipedia (2007) website states that public relations are an active managing of communication of a business to be able to keep a positive image. This would involve announcing success, reducing failures, and letting people know about changes within an organization. Google (2007) defines public relations as an activity that helps build a relationship between a company and the customer. Google (2007) also states that public relations are an activity or press coverage that is design to make a company look good. The University of Phoenix (2004) defines public relations as a process to influence the public's opinion through media or actions.

All the definitions cover that public relations is a form of communications to influence people or customers to be in favor of a company. In other words, a company can use media to make the company look great in the public's eyes so that they could be the favorable company to go to.

The difference between the definitions is that one mentions announcing success, the changes within a company, and the reduction in failures of a company. The purpose for public relations is to make customer think that a certain company is the best at what they are doing so customers will continue or start doing business with that company. Another difference is that one involves management problems and issues. In other words, public relations involve management listening to the public and responding to their opinions.

Why are there so many definitions? The reason there are so many different definitions is because many people have their opinions on what the definition to public relations is. Throughout the years many different definitions for public relations have been
