Rabbit-Proof Fence Essay - Topic One

In the film "Rabbit-Proof Fence" directed by Phillip Noyce it is proved that it is true and can be said confidently that our life is a series of never-ending journeys, some trivial, and others vitally important. By "journey" the question means a process or course likened to travelling. By "trivial" the question means as in of little significance and no importance. By "vitally important" the question means of great meaning and importance in life. This statement is demonstrated clearly in many ways through the film "Rabbit-Proof Fence." Characters in "Rabbit-Proof Fence" endure many emotional, psychological and physical journeys throughout the film. Characters deal with extreme physical journeys pushing them corporeally out of customary circumstances. Characters are also pushed into psychologically unbearable circumstances.

Molly, Daisy and Gracie endure a daunting and epic journey from the Moore River Native Settlement back to what they call "home" at Jigalong. The three girls endure physical (and psychological) hardships throughout the whole journey home. They have the same basic urge, which is to return home to their mother. Courageously they set out for nine weeks, travelling 1500 miles in total. Molly is especially strong willed and brave. "This girl is clever. She wants to go home." Moodoo the tracker states, his only line in the film. Molly has a strong sense of what to do, she cares for her younger sister and cousin and works to fool the merciless tracker from day one. Molly develops many physical, devious strategies to make sure herself; her sister and cousin do not get caught. These include; walking through the river and various water beds to prevent foot prints, managing to find some socks (and a jacket), so as a result the socks prevented her footprints from being traceable. She was also careful; from time to time she carried Gracie and Daisy to avoid their footprints from being traceable. The girls are so incredibly strong to continue on their decrepit feet, eerie eyes and painful, aching limbs, but they know that the end product isn't that far away and continue with strength and ambition.

The three girls undergo a colossal psychological journey throughout the whole film. The girls learn to understand that it can never be guessed what is waiting around the corner and to take life as it comes. Molly had to regrettably grow up promptly at the young age of twelve to support Daisy (eight) and Gracie (ten.) She had to make sure that they knew that everything was going to be in order and all right within time. Molly knew she was now the mother figure, resulting from not having their mothers around anymore to care for them. Throughout the journey Molly retains her strength and remembers what her mother told her. "See that bird? That's the spirit bird. He will always look after you." When Molly is enduring a tough time trying to stay indomitable and put things into perspective the spirit bird flies over, heartening her to continue the ordeal. Throughout this journey, the three girls learn the strengths of their minds and realise that they are competent of anything and everything if they stay fixed. They learn that life isn't always wonderful and that they won't always be around the people they love and familiar surroundings, but that tough times will face them and they will have to survive on their own, even at the young age of eight. This is one of the never-ending journeys of life.

Throughout the movie we see the three girls experience thematic journeys, imparticular Molly. Molly is the first to build up her courage and become confident, knowing that whatever happens they are going to be alright. The three girls are extremely courageous setting off all on their own, not knowing what is ahead. They remain tough for each other and don't give up. They go through many hardships while tracking across the barren land, they don't mind though, deep inside they know that in the end they are going to see their friends and family again. Not only do the girls go on a journey of courage, but also a journey of determination and strength. They believe that no matter what happens the tracker will not catch them. "Tracker's not gonna get us." Molly says this in strength and determination to her young sister and cousin,
