I believe journalism is still relevant and will remain relevant even as society shifts more to digital media. Journalism has been around arguably since the early days of civilization, just not in the form we know it currently. For example, in ancient Greece it has its root in the oral storytelling of great deeds. When print was invented journalism made its transformation into more of the modern style we know. During the 19th century, journalism played a huge role in society and its functions. During this time, it was dangerous for journalists to write stories that criticized or told the truth about popular figures or the government as they could be killed or jailed for their writings. However, the establishment of the United States allowed for freedom of the press. This revolutionized journalism forever: suddenly journalists could write criticism of the governments and not have to fear for their lives. Journalism quickly spread by way of newspaper and soon became a pillar of our society. Newspapers have survived all this time and even with a shift to more online content they still endure. Journalism has retained its place in our society for so long due to the essential need for it. A source of independent, reliable news about recent events has always been relied upon, especially in times of hardship. Journalism is one of the few things that manages to impact every aspect of our life, from world events to sports. Especially in an age where people like to become reporters via social media the importance of having a reliable news source that actually does the investigation into stories has grown. Unfortunately, when untrained people try to become journalists or reporters on stories there are often incorrect or fabricated facts that are published. This cements the need for journalism and its relevance. However, the only problem with journalism is bias.
