THE INCAS

At its peak the Incan society had six-million plus people. The Incan society was made up of ayllus, these were clans of families who lived and worked together. The allyu was supervised by curaca, meaning chief. They lived in thatched roofed houses made of stone and mud.

They clothed themselves with garments made of alpaca, this animal was also included in many of their religious ceremonies. Their main food was potatoes. They also raised corn, llama and alpaca for food, labor, and clothing.

Everyone worked except for the very young and the very old who were physically incapable of doing the work. 2/3 of the farmer's goods were shared by tax system, the rest they kept, some goods would go to others, some would be received, and some would be sacrificed to the gods.

The ruler, Sapa Inca, and his wives had supreme control over the empire. Below the Inca was the royal family which consisted of the Inca's immediate family and his children. At the very bottom were the common people, they were grouped in squads of ten people each with a single boss.

Incas were the most brilliant engineers. After they would conquer someone the conquered would pay a tax, that tax was used to build an astonishing network of roads and terraced farmlands through the Andes Mountains. They also built aqueducts. Plus they were the most advanced in medicine and surgery.

The Inca Empire was the largest nation on Earth. It still remains the largest native state to have existed in the western hemisphere. Some of the roads that they built ran almost the entire length of the South American Pacific coast. They paved the roads with flat stones and built stone walls to prevent travelers from falling off cliffs. The system of roads ran through
