The crusades did fight in the name of religion, because of pilgrims.

2. What prompted the first crusade?

In 1050 a group of militant Turkish Muslims took over. They decided that they didn't like and couldn't tolerate Christens and decided to kill many. When the Seljuk's threatened the city of Byzantine Empire, The Emperor was quickly on to Pope Urban II and asked him for his help. Pope Urban II was very helpful at the time.

3. Explain why Jerusalem is such an important city for so many people in the world.

It has being important for a long time to 3 of the world's Chief religions. It was where Solomon, a forefather of the Jews, built a temple.

4. How is the st John Ambulance Society linked to the medieval crusade?

After the first crusade, many crusaders settled in the region. They built things and set up orders of knights to protect pilgrims and knights and their forts. These orders made up of warrior monk, included the knights of St John Hospitaller.

5. Why do you think Europeans were so eager to fight in the Crusade?

Because they had a powerful army that included horses, chain mail armour, lances and maces. They were successful as a team and they believed that they were strong.

6. Suggest why so many died before they reached Jerusalem. (Remember what they were wearing and think about the climate and the terrain)
