Andrew Niccol's 'Gattaca' is a science fictional film about ambition, conquest and determination.

The movie is set in the future with a number of very different characters, Vincent is a very determined soul who was brought into this world in what's not considered ''the natural way''. His parents decided that he was to be a god child which means they would leave everything under his hands, unfortunately god did not bless Vincent with the best genetic makeup and he was destined for failure and a life expectancy of 30 years.

Anton is his younger but bigger, stronger brother that was genetically created by the local pharmacist, Anton was named after his father, for he was more perfectly made up and was worthy of his fathers name where as Vincent was not.

Jerome Morrow, also known as Eugene was introduced as a hero and near perfect human being, but to Vincent's and also the viewers shock, even a person with Eugene's genetic makeup with near perfection could also have something limiting his life.

He was to come to Vincent's rescue by lending him his identity, in return Vincent pay the rent and looked after his "personal needs''.

Irene is a sincere woman who I believe is quite understanding, she falls for Vincent not because of 'his' genetic profile but for his personality and human spirit.

Vincent also falls for Irene and learns a lot about the world after he has done so. But out of all of these different characters who is the real hero in the movie 'Gattaca'?

Vincent holds a lot of heroic qualities, but what sort of heroic qualities does he have? Vincent's bravery was displayed in the scene where he an Irene are crossing the busy road.

Vincent's eyesight is not as well as it should be because of him removing his contact lenses, he struggles to see anything at all whilst crossing this busy road.

Determination for his final goal, which is to gain entrance into space, was what drove Vincent into stepping out onto the road and crossing, not leading any evidence to Irene that he couldn't see.

Another heroic quality of Vincent's is when he saves his brother Anton in the last two swimming games that they play, Vincent during the last swim was not close to his brother Anton at all, but this did not stop him from completing the heroic act of saving his life.

The final and most valuable heroic quality of Vincent is his spirit.

As the quote of the movie goes "there is not gene for the human spirit" this is very evident in the way that Vincent acts compared to the gifted and 'advantaged' people.

Vincent's human spirit was exceptional and it was what kept him in the game with the genetically modified beings, the continuous negativity that Vincent received about a part of himself that he couldn't change drove him to his determination that motivated him into reaching his 'true' potential.

Jerome Morrow or Eugene
