Part 1 - Case study

A.

  1. How you will acquire your first 10,000 users

  • I would acquire first 10,000 users by giving a feature that when user signs up for checklater.com he can choose the topic of his interest or better recommendation to the user on the skills he is passionate about like technology, topics related food, travel, space, business, entertainment, mental space etc.,
  • When user signs up he can add on the social accounts he is connected to prior like Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, genius, Tumblr, Evernote etc., and invite his friends to join the site, send a message or kind of feature like shouting to his friends in a fun message form to use site, so that he can create a group of like minded people or he along with his friends can join into the groups of similar thinking or interest people.
  • The user can also view his friends profile who joined before to see what posts they are viewing and submitting and also start conversations on the posts with comments.
  • For each new website login who joined through the user’s invite the customer can get some brownie points which he can use to share his post or make his post reach to the home page next time based on the points.
  • Subscription feature for RSS feeds regularly to customer’s mail or the prescribed mobile number/messenger where he can get update of the new posts on his interest topic, newsletter or the weekly publication would help in making one-time website visitor to a repeated visitor.

  1. User Engagement/Retention
  • The user engagement can happen when he finds unique news with unique content based on his preference. Demographic research based on the user’s interest group would help in finding the interesting topic which catches the user attention.
  • Tagging, subject based keywords helps the user to assign their saved links easily categorized and would make it simple for other users to find their customers. It also helps the user to tag their bookmarks with index terms and sort them into folders which can be displayed in either text/ graphical form with witty titles to folders would increase the user engagement.
  • Social buttons for sharing the post to the group would help user engagement more.
  • Widgets like a small tool for the import of bookmarks from other social bookmarking sites like pocket, mix etc., and export the topics he found in check later site in the form of pdf and doc format would be a useful feature for the user retention.
  • Integration of the extension of website to user browser can help the user engagement more as he tends to read the articles or view the video not only from check later but also from external sites like online news sites, YouTube etc., when he finds an interesting topic online he can bookmark from the external site and can read or view it later and the bookmarks added to check later can be found in the saved list and it can be sorted based on the time he added or any other way the user wants to sort it out also an option to change the name of the title based on what the user wants to save it can be also provided with this feature.
  • Additional features like the way he wants to see his background i.e., different color based on his preference or the way he can change the font size/style, with a small widget which can also speed read through the articles or feature where user can listen to them with dictation would be very useful for the user retention as he saves all the articles to read in his free time and it would be helping him a lot when he can get on this additional feature where he can be able to hear it instead of him reading it in his busy schedule.
  • Some content which the user wants to translate to read it better in the language he knows i.e., translation feature would also help in engaging the user.
  1. Monetization
  • Monetization can be achieved when the user shares his post to group of people with similar interest, they can view it and would make more people of similar interest to view the post which would generate more views and the one post which receives more views and votes can make it to the homepage generating revenue based on view/visitor.
  • Also from past research we can see that most of the percentage of the people who view these sites are the ones seeking information about college education which almost consists of 78%, can be provided with a feature which have functions useful for classroom students giving instructor tools for setting up group of students, highlighting key information and also the feature to take notes, discussing and commenting would also add to the revenue of the site.
  • With certain subscription price the students or the non student customers can view exclusive topics without any advertisements or he can save the posts and can view either the text/video wherever he left from.

B.      Highest value feature: -

  • The feature I think highly valued one is the post that customer can add on based on his interest and the post moving to the home page as it generates not only the monetary benefits but also it encourages the users to see their posts making to homepage.
  • It allows the traffic directly into it.

This new feature allows a “standard” option to create campaigns and target not only by content category, but also by age, gender and location for $0.10 per visitor thereby allowing advertisements also but typically at a much lower cost per click.

  • Now we can see how it works

After a post is submitted, check later members can view it and decide whether they want to “like” it by clicking a button next to the post. While the number of ‘likes’ helps a post’s popularity, it’s not the sole arbiter. Some links posts can make it to the homepage with as little as 35 likes; other posts may get 150 and never make it. A post’s popularity is determined by an algorithm, which considers many factors like.
o Number of “likes”
o Number of “dislikes” or negative votes
o Time a post is on check later
o Diversity of the members who “like” the article
