The Bed and Breakfast

Imagine stepping outside onto an upstairs wooden porch. The sound of roosters and chickens clucking seems to have woken you up too early. You try to take in a nice deep relaxing breath, but the wind picks up the smell of the compost pile instead. You then begin to walk down the steps that will led you to a door on the side of the house, but you see the steps are covered in chicken poop, so you turn around to go back inside. As you make your way through the hallway, you realize the air inside the Bed and Breakfast is the same as outside, 80*F at 9am, because there is no air conditioner. As you make your way down stairs to the kitchen, you see many new faces from other people staying there. They all stare and awkwardly say hello before carrying on with their morning coffee. This is the morning of your second day, at the Bed and Breakfast.

Imagine stepping outside onto an upstairs wooden porch. The soothing, sounds of nature and animals fill the air with seclusion. The feeling of relaxation rushes over you as you embrace the warm sun on your skin. You notice the Autumn, fallen leaves all around the chickens and garden on the ground below. You decide to go back inside, down the stairs, and towards the comforting smell of breakfast. As you sit around the guest filled table, everyone politely attempts to make small conversations, before eating. Food is delivered to the table and it is a natural, farm fresh, homemade breakfast, made by the Bed and Breakfast owner. All of the guest ask for seconds and finishing eating before heading out for the rest of their day. This is the morning of your second day, at the Bed and Breakfast.

        Analysis

I created different impressions by using strategy number two. In the first paragraph, I omitted information that would make the place seem more desirable, like the breakfast and feeling of relaxation. By doing so, it emphasized the negative attributes, like the smell of the compost pile, and left the reader with an unpleasant impression without stating so. In the second paragraph I did the opposite. I emphasized the positives, like the sounds of nature and the feeling of relaxation, while omitting negative details such as, no air conditioner. By cutting out the negatives, the reader would have no idea anything negative took place at the Bed and Breakfast. The second paragraph has a strong presence of a pleasant place to visit because it is filled with positive supportive descriptions.
