Abstract

In today’s modern society, employees’ motivation and willing to work for a company are the essential keys which lead to the success of doing business. Obviously, each company has to realize its employee’s needs and creates strategies to encourage these people if the company wants to expand and minimize the waste of assets. Hence, this report was established to analysis one of the most important problems that Starbucks had faced in recent years: ineffective holding employees.

In this report, analysis the problem was the main procedure in order to discover how Starbucks applied its strategies to overcome and if these strategies are worked or not. Moreover, analyzing SWOT of Starbucks also indicates the advantages and disadvantages of the external and internal conditions of Starbucks. Based on this information, several recommendations are providing for Starbucks. Finally, this report indicates the significant role of leading skill in operating company in other to create an motivated environment for employees.


  1. Industry environment

The coffee shop industry in the U.S. includes more than 20,000 stores with combined annual revenue of nearly $12 billion. Major companies are Starbucks, Dunkin’ Donuts, Caribou, Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf, and Diedrich (Gloria Jean’s). The products sold by coffee shops are beverages as well as complimentary food items.  Beverages include coffee and tea, cold blended beverages, bottles of soft drinks and juices.  Food products mainly consist of pastries and bakery items. Many coffee shops sell whole or ground coffee beans for home consumption and some of these shops sell coffee or espresso-making equipments, grinders and other accessories.  Most coffee shops serve high-quality coffee, which stands for their brand, known as specialty coffee.

It can be known that Starbucks is one of the most famous coffee brands in the world. The Starbucks opened by three partners are Jerry Baldwin, Zev Siegl, and Gordon Bowker who met each other while they were taking part in the University of San Francisco. Initially, this brand started in a small shop with the inspiration of selling high-quality coffee beans and roasting beans in Seattle in 1971. The company did well, but its business began to change in the 80s. In 1980's, Howard Schultz joined Starbucks in 1982 and in 1990's, the great demand for coffee allowed Starbucks to expand its houses beyond Seattle, first to the rest of the United States, and then further afield. Today, Starbucks has more than 6,000 locations in over 30 countries and the Starbucks phenomenon will continue in the future.
