11. Both red and yellow are shown multiple times throughout the novel. Yellow is used to show corruption and the implosion of Raskolnikov as a character. Red is used to show violence (Raskolnikov’s murder).

12. Raskolnikov is really a sympathetic person, throughout the book he has made many choices that suggest he cares for the people around him. It is only after he thinks about his decisions intellectually does he regret them. When he sees someone in trouble or in tough times, he does not really hesitate to step in and help. He only claims indifference after convincing himself that what he is worrying about does not matter.

16. Animals are being compared to humans to show similarities in their nature. Raskolnikov sees everyone as “beasts’ and “animals” to emphasize his disgust for humanity due to his introverted lifestyle.

22.  Raskolnikov returns to the scene of the crime because he finally is starting to have doubts about his crime. He starts to question his superman ideal he described in his article and revisits the scene to grasp whether what he did was justifiable or not.

23. Raskolnikov feels rejuvenated after Marmeladov’s death because he despised him. Just like the pawnbroker, Marmeladov is one of those people that Raskolnikov want to get rid of. Seeing his death revives his flair and reminds him of his goal. Seeing his family however, brings him back to reality and realize what he has done.

25. Yes, Razumikhin’s ideal life is a peaceful one. Unlike Raskolnikov, he sees life and humanity in a positive light and wants to live in a world where he can be in peace and happiness.

27. Sonya is the driving force for Raskolnikov. She directs him towards the path of God and eventually leads Raskolnikov into confessing his crimes to the police. Katerina died without giving up her pride. When the priest came to offer his services, she refused thinking that she had suffered too much for God to not have pity on her. Svidrigailov came into Raskolnikov’s room one day and asked Dunya’s hand in marriage, which Raskolnikov firmly and swiftly refused.

32. Sonya provides for her family through prostitution. Lizaveta gave her the bible she owns today. This is important because Raskolnikov killed Lizaveta in collateral damage. Sonya converts Raskolnikov by reading him the story of Lazarus. This is important for Raskolnikov because the story talks about revival and redemption.

33. Porfiry is fairly sure Raskolnikov committed the crime. His strongest piece of evidence is his knowledge that Raskolnikov visited the scene of the crime. This piece of evidence almost convinces him that Raskolnikov is the murderer. Porfiry triggers many of Raskolnikov’s actions and leads him to Sonya who leads him to confessing his crime.
