Convocation 2007-2008

On September 28, 2007, I attended one of NCCU'S most important events, which is Fall Convocation 2007-2008. Fall Convocation was taken place on campus at the McLendon-McDougald Gymnasium. The event opened with a warm welcome from Dr. Beverly Washington Jones, whom is the Provost and Vice Chancellor for academic affairs. The main Speaker of the event was Chancellor Charlie Nelms. Before Chancellor Nelms became a member of the Eagle family, he served as the Vice President for Institutional development and student Affairs for the Indiana University system.

"A conversation with the family", was the title of Chancellor Charles Nelms speech. In his speech, chancellor Nelms discussed ways that student individuals and the entire eagle family could contribute to improve the university and our community. Three of the five tasks Chancellor Nelms asked the student body and eagle family to do are: to create a strong sense of community, raise the expectations for ourselves and our communities, and to take care of the university surroundings.

The point that Chancellor Nelms made about creating a strong sense of community was that if we want our young adults in this generation to succeed in school and in life. We as a community must uplift them in every way possible, otherwise if they fail, that means we have failed them as a community.

The second point that Chancellor Nelms made was about raising the expectations for ourselves and our communities. He said that if we want better for ourselves as individuals and as a community, then we must exceed to a higher level. If we want good things to happen in our lives and in our community, we have to not only believe and pray about it, But we have to do our part, let God do his and things will fall into place.
