“Australia has a European past but an Asian future.” Discuss

Australia was first colonized by the British so of course Australia will always have strong links to the UK. But now times are moving on and so must we. We must look towards the future and the future is in Asia.

To show we have a European past we have to look at the fact that Australia is a predominantly white country and for many years we had very, very few migrants coming to Australia that weren’t white. Links to England are that we went to war when England did and that many people living in Australia still used to call England the mother land’ and also that the Queen is still our Head of State and has power in Australia.

Australia decided to create the White Australia Policy in 1901 to stop ant migrants, that weren’t of white European background, from entering Australia. This policy was in place until 1973 but started to break down in the 1940s. This started to sever our ties with England and Europe and we started looking to Asia as our future.

The reasons why Australia’s future lies with Asia is simple. Our closest neighbour is the Asian country of Indonesia. Many people from Australia travel to Indonesia and other Asian countries for holidays or work and this also works vise versa. One great thing about having a holiday in Asia is that it is cheap to fly, the food is good, and they are many great things to do and see. When people from Asia come down to Australia as they often do they inject a lot of money into our economy.

Another reason is trade. It is cheap and easy to send resources to Asia and so companies can make a good profit and as Asian countries, like Japan, are extremely short on natural resources such as coal and gas, and they are one of the leaders in technology it makes for a good arrangement
