Historical Background

Archetypal criticism focuses on the generic, recurring, and conventional elements in literature that cannot be explained as matters of historical influence or tradition. While this kind of criticism accepts as its informing principle that archetypes- typical images, characters, narrative designs, themes, and other literary phenomena are present in all literature and so provide the basis for study of its interconnectedness[2].

Wilbur S. Scott (1962) characterized the approach as psychological insofar as it analyzes the work of art’s appeal to the audience and yet sociological in its attendance upon basic cultural or social past, but non-historical in its demonstration of literature’s timeless value, independent of particular periods.

Ang mga karanasang ito or  memories, exist in the form of archetypes: patterns or images of repeated human experiences such as birth, death, rebirth, the four seasons, motherhood, and heroic quest to name a few, that expresses themselves in our stories, dreams, religions, and fantasies occurring in literature in the form of recurrent plot patterns, images, or character types.[3]

For Jung, one major product of the unconscious is the hero myth, an exposition in the language of fairy tale of a child’s development from infancy to adulthood. The most important archetype for Jung is the “self”. The “self” is central to the process of individuation and pertains to the second half of the individual’s life, succeeding the hero myth and its concerns with the way the individual establishes himself or herself in the world. Another archetypal figure distinguished by Jung is the “wise old man, symbolizing intelligence, knowledge and superior insight. [4]

Another influential person in the Archetypal Criticism is Northrop Frye. Frye’s believe on monomyth, that all literature makes up one complete and whole story, which in fact he borrowed from Jung’s form of archetype on the pattern of repeated human experiences specifically the four seasons. This monomyth can best be diagrammed as a circle containing four separate phases, with each phase corresponding to a season of the year and to peculiar cycles of human experiences. The Romance phase, which is located at the  top of the circle, is our summer story. In this kind of story, all our wishes are fulfilled, and we can achieve total happiness. At the bottom of the circle is the winter, or the anti-romance phase. The opposite of summer, this phase tells the story of bondage, imprisonment, frustration, and fear. Midway between Romance and Anti-Romance and to the right of the middle of the circle is spring, or Comedy. This phase relates the story of our rise from Anti-romance, from frustration to freedom and happiness. Correspondingly, across the circle is the Tragedy or fall, narrating our fall from the Romance phase and from happiness and freedom to disaster. According to Frye, all stories can be placed somewhere in this diagram.[5]
