According Oakley and Royal College of Psychiatrists (2011), psychiatry refers to a medical field of study that examines, the causes, diagnosis, prevention, control and treatment of mental disorders. For instance, there are several types of mental disorders ranging from various behavioral, affective, perceptual and cognitive abnormalities affecting humankind (Tampi, (2008). Research into issues of mental health reveals some mental disorders to have commonly increased all over the world to affect people ranging from children to adults.

Autism spectrum disorders are an example of long lasting life neurodevelopmental disabilities that begin before the age of 36 months in children and affect them to old age (CDDHV, 2010). Autism disorders exhibit different characteristics such as impaired social interaction and communication skills. For instance, children with autism experience impaired verbal and non-verbal communication with stereotypic behavior, interests, and activities. The disorders arise from abnormalities in brain development and functioning.

The aim of this article is to provide a broad analysis of a contextual case study where an inmate, referred to as Alfredo Albondigas is threatening to kill a security facility maintenance personnel. For instance, Alfredo has decidedly given a two-hour ultimatum that the flying saucer should leave the exercise yard as he believes that the two are mimicking him.  The situation seems too fictional but deteriorating as the inmate has adamantly wrapped his head in an aluminum foil, and he is in possession of a handmade knife. Nevertheless, the efforts of the reaction team to kill Albondigas are proofing futile.

The paper has two parts. In the fast part, the article develops an operational plan used to address Mr. Albondigas case. However, in the second part, it utilizes the Global Assessment of Functioning (GAF) to evaluate some mental disorders and the probability of resulting in a case similar to that of Mr. Albondigas. The mental disorders examined will include antisocial personality disorder, borderline intellectual functioning, and hepatitis-C. Additionally, it will be of great significance to address life imprisonment without parole, and the attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

 For this reason, this article presents an operation plan made by the warden and an incident commander aiming at dealing with the mentally ill offender. The service plan will, consequently, describe the mental state of the offender with a broad examination of the mental illnesses he is suffering. Additionally, the plan will identify and describe the different types of medical personnel that would assist in dealing with the offender. Moreover, the program will appreciate the imperativeness of examining what may take place upon reaching the deadline set by Mr. Albondigas. Consequently, the operational plan will include the procedural approach taken by the negotiator while speaking to the offender.

Explanation of Mr. Albondigas Mental State and likely Mental Disorders

The scenario given shows that the offender is suffering from a number of different mental disorders that may force him to injure the two officers. First it is evident that Mr. Albondigas is a victim of antisocial personality disorder that involves the habitual use of a certain defense mechanism. Albondigas has a knife as a defense mechanism to kill those he is accusing to be after his suffering. The disorder is also common in setting such as prisons with nonspecific criminal acts.

The disorder is also a determinant of others such as the borderline intellectual functioning that offender seems to be also suffering from.

Borderline intellectual functioning has a characteristics of poor social skills, impulse control difficulties, and distress in most or all areas of life. Such patients engage in harmful and self-destructive behaviors, unstable relationships and exhibit low self-esteem. Albondigas has a low self-esteem and not only does he appear to be suffering from hallucination but also disturbed to the extent of threatening kill others. Moreover the fiction appearance of the situation arises from the ability of the disorder have characteristics dramatic, emotional and erratic behaviors.

Medical Personnel’s and Professionals required at the Scene

The Albondigas incident requires a number of medical personnel to attend to him. For instance, it will be important to avail a psychiatrist or a general nurse who has a broad understanding of psychiatry. In addition, availing a physiotherapist as well a psychologist could help address the case.

The Role of the Medical Personnel in Providing Relevant Information to address Mr. Albondigas Case

The physiotherapist well-trained in handling violent patients will apply his tactics to grab the knife and contain Mr. Albondigas out of the open confrontation. Consequently, the psychiatric nurse will assist in taking care of the offender while the psychiatric doctor will help in providing nobble information of containing the offender as well providing the diagnosis of a range of disorders he is suffering from. The psychologist can help deal with two officers plotting to retaliate by killing the offender.

It is evident that Albondigas is suffering from a very dangerous mental disorder and if left he will automatically stub to kill his claimants. Taking a necessary action is significant to counteract the antisocial personality disorder as it puts someone in a state that he could do anything to satisfy his feelings regardless of the consequences.

The negotiator should first seek to understand the offender’s mental condition before taking any other step. During the assessment time his negotiator shook seek to understand the historical background of the offend ant. He should establish historical background of drug or cannabis abuse as well as alcohol brewing. A deep understanding with cool collaborative negotiation process will put the offend ant under containment.

The flavor known as DSM evolved into a popular and famous mode of diagnosing and classifying mental disorder up to date. However, many countries including Australia utilizes the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders and the International Classification of Diseases.
